Driving Overseas: The International Driving Permit and When You Need One

Your Singapore driving licence is recognised across most of ASEAN, but many other countries require an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well. Japan, Taiwan and the US are among the popular destinations that do. In Singapore, only the Automobile Association of Singapore (AA Singapore) issues IDPs. It costs S$20, is valid for one year from issue and can’t be renewed. The IDP doesn’t replace your licence: you must carry both, and overseas that means a physical Singapore licence, not the digital one.

Where do I need one?

Under an ASEAN arrangement, a Singapore licence can be used in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Elsewhere, an IDP is often required, and AA Singapore names Japan, Taiwan and the US as popular destinations that need one. Even where it isn’t required by law, a rental company may ask for it. How do I apply?

Walk in at AA Singapore’s office on Kung Chong Road, or apply online. You’ll need a valid Singapore driving licence, your NRIC or pass, and a recent passport-sized photo. Online applications take about 10 working days and must be delivered to a Singapore address; overseas delivery isn’t available.

Why do I need a physical licence?

The Traffic Police no longer issue physical licences unless you ask. Overseas authorities and rental companies generally won’t accept the digital licence on your phone, and you need the physical licence to apply for an IDP too. Request one from a Traffic Police office or driving centre well before your trip.

For S$20, get the IDP whenever a trip might involve a car outside ASEAN. Only get it from AA Singapore: permits from unofficial websites are rejected, particularly in Japan and Korea. And sort out the physical licence first.

Can I renew my IDP?

No. It lasts one year; apply for a new one after it expires.

Can foreigners get one in Singapore?

Only if they hold a Singapore driving licence. Holders of foreign licences apply in the country that issued their licence.

Does my car insurance cover me abroad?

Check your policy; cover for rental cars overseas is often separate.
