If you arrive at a hawker centre to find every shutter down, it’s probably a cleaning day. Hawker centres managed by the National Environment Agency (NEA) close for a thorough clean several times a year, usually for one to three days at a time, and for weeks or months when they’re being repaired or upgraded. The dates are set in advance and published by NEA, so a 30-second check before you set out saves a wasted trip.

Those closures are part of why our hawker centres stay pleasant places to eat. Here’s how they work, and how to plan around them.

Quick facts

  • Who sets the dates: NEA, for the hawker centres it manages.
  • How often: several times a year, roughly every three to four months.
  • How long: usually one to three days for routine cleaning.
  • Repairs and upgrading: closures of weeks to months, announced ahead.
  • Where to check: NEA’s list of hawker centre closures, and the closure-dates dataset on data.gov.sg.
  • A single dark stall is usually its own rest day, not a centre-wide closure.

The three kinds of closure

ClosureWhat happensTypical length
Routine cleaningThe whole centre is washed down: floors, tables, ceilings, drains and exhausts1 to 3 days, a few times a year
Repairs and upgradingRepainting, re-roofing, new ventilation or larger upgradesWeeks to several months
Stall rest daysIndividual stallholders take a day or two off each weekVaries by stall

How do I check before I go?

  1. NEA’s website publishes a list of hawker centre closure dates for the year, with the reason for each.
  2. data.gov.sg carries the same information as an open dataset, “Dates of Hawker Centres Closure”, which many closure-checker sites and apps draw on.
  3. Notices at the centre go up in the weeks before a closure.
  4. For a single stall, check its social media page or a recent review, since stall rest days aren’t on NEA’s list.

Some closures coming up in late 2026

The WahLiao Verdict

A clean hawker centre is worth a day without it. Before a special trip across the island, for a Bib Gourmand bowl or a birthday supper, check NEA’s closure list and the stall’s own page. Keep a second-choice centre nearby in mind, and a closed centre becomes a happy excuse to try somewhere new.

Questions people ask

Do coffee shops close for cleaning too?

Coffee shops are privately run, so they set their own cleaning and closure days. NEA’s list covers the hawker centres it manages.

Does every stall close on cleaning days?

Yes. During a centre-wide cleaning closure, all cooked-food stalls are shut. Where a centre has a wet market, its closure dates are listed too.

When are closures most common?

Closures are spread through the year, but in late 2026 many fall in mid-September, late November and mid-December. Check before the holidays, when you’re most likely to plan a family meal out.

Are stalls open over Chinese New Year?

Many stallholders take several days off around Chinese New Year, even when the centre itself is open. If you have a favourite stall, check its notice board or social media page in the week before.
