Coming home to Changi is quick if you do one thing before you fly: file the free SG Arrival Card in the MyICA app or on ICA’s website within three days before arrival, the arrival day included. Singapore citizens, PRs and long-term pass holders aged six and above then use the automated lanes, which identify you by your enrolled biometrics; since 30 September 2024 residents have been able to clear Changi without showing a passport. Walk through the Green Channel unless you have goods to declare. Getting home costs from about S$2 by MRT on a card, or a metered taxi plus an airport surcharge of S$6, rising to S$8 from 5pm to 11.59pm (as of October 2026).
Welcome back. Here is how to go from aircraft door to your own front door with the fewest queues and the smallest bill.
Quick facts
- SG Arrival Card: free, filed within three days before arrival; residents need it by air and sea, not at the land checkpoints.
- Automated lanes: for travellers aged six and above with biometrics enrolled with ICA.
- Children who got their first passport before age six must enrol their biometrics before they can use the lanes.
- Green Channel if nothing to declare; Red Channel for dutiable, controlled or prohibited goods.
- Taxi airport surcharge: S$8 from 5pm to 11.59pm, S$6 at other times, on top of the meter.
- MRT: adult card fares from S$1.28, by distance.
From the gate to the arrival hall
- Before you fly home: submit the SG Arrival Card in the MyICA app. Residents’ details are pre-filled, and it takes a few minutes. Skip it and you will be asked to fill it in at the checkpoint and rejoin the queue.
- At immigration: head for the automated lanes. Remove caps and sunglasses and look at the camera. Residents’ face and iris biometrics are already on ICA’s records.
- With young children: under-sixes cannot use the automated lanes, so the family goes to a manned counter together. Older children who got their passport before turning six need a one-time biometric enrolment at a manned counter or a designated lane.
- Baggage: collect your bags from the belt shown on the screens.
- Customs: use the Green Channel if you are within your allowances. If you are over your GST relief or carrying dutiable goods, declare and pay through Customs@SG before you reach the checkpoint, or use the Red Channel.
Getting home: what it costs
| Option | What you pay (October 2026) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| MRT | Distance fare on a card, adult from S$1.28; basic adult card fares cap at S$2.57 | Light luggage, daytime, solo travellers |
| Metered taxi from the rank | Flag-down S$4.40 to S$4.80, plus distance, plus S$6 airport surcharge (S$8 from 5pm to 11.59pm), plus any time-of-day surcharge | Families, big bags, late arrivals |
| Grab, Gojek or other ride-hail | Fixed quote before you confirm, including surcharges and fees | Comparing against the taxi queue |
The time-of-day surcharges are what make a late taxi expensive. Daily from 5pm to 11.59pm, there is a 25 per cent peak surcharge on the metered fare; from midnight to 5.59am, the late-night surcharge is 50 per cent. Ride-hail apps build all of this into the price they quote, so check the app before joining the taxi queue.
Worked example: the Tans land at 9pm with two children and four suitcases. Suppose their ride home shows S$20 on the meter. The 25 per cent evening peak surcharge adds S$5, and the evening airport surcharge adds S$8: S$20 + S$5 + S$8 = S$33. Had they landed at 2pm on a weekday, there would be no peak surcharge and the airport surcharge would be S$6: S$20 + S$6 = S$26. The MRT would cost far less, but with four suitcases and tired children, the taxi wins.
The WahLiao Verdict
File the SG Arrival Card on the way to the departure gate abroad, and you will be through Changi’s automated lanes in seconds. If your child got their passport as a baby, use your next trip to enrol their biometrics so they can join you at the lanes. For the journey home, take the MRT when you are travelling light, and when you are not, compare the ride-hail quote with the taxi meter, remembering the airport and evening surcharges.
Questions people ask
Do Singapore citizens need the SG Arrival Card?
Yes, when arriving by air or sea. It is free, and must be filed within three days before arrival. It is not needed for residents at the Woodlands and Tuas land checkpoints.
Can my five-year-old use the automated lane?
No. The automated lanes are for travellers aged six and above. Go to a manned counter together.
Do I need to show my passport at Changi?
Residents can clear the automated lanes at Changi without presenting a passport, but always carry it: officers may ask for it.
Is there an airport surcharge on Grab?
Location surcharges apply to trips starting at the airport however you book; ride-hail apps include them in the quoted price.
