Gym memberships in Singapore span a huge range. A public ActiveSG gym costs citizens and PRs S$2.50 an entry (S$1.50 for students and seniors) or S$30 a month for an unlimited peak pass. Commercial chains cost far more: a SingSaver comparison updated in April 2026 lists 24/7 Fitness at about S$90 to S$110 a month, Anytime Fitness at about S$105 to S$125, and premium clubs such as Pure Fitness and Virgin Active at about S$210 to S$265. Many chains ask for 12- to 18-month contracts. To cancel, follow the contract’s notice terms and do it in writing. After True Fitness and True Yoga closed on 10 September 2026, leaving more than S$609,000 in reported losses, the lesson is clear: pay monthly, not upfront.
The best gym is the one you actually go to. Here is how to pick one without signing away more than you meant to.
Quick facts
- ActiveSG gym entry: S$2.50 for adult citizens and PRs, S$1.50 for students and seniors, S$3.30 standard rate.
- ActiveSG unlimited peak pass: S$30 a month or S$300 a year for adults aged 18 to 54.
- Commercial chains: about S$90 to S$265 a month, depending on brand and access.
- Contracts of 12 to 18 months are common at chains; read the exit terms before you sign.
- CASE received 241 complaints after the True Fitness and True Yoga closure.
- A five-day cooling-off period applies to some sales made outside a shop, such as at roadshows, not to ordinary gym sign-ups.
What does a gym cost, as of October 2026?
| Option | Typical price | Commitment |
|---|---|---|
| ActiveSG gym, per entry | S$2.50 (citizen or PR adult) | None |
| ActiveSG unlimited peak pass | S$30 a month, S$160 for six months, S$300 a year | Prepaid period |
| Pay-per-use pods | About S$12 to S$20 a session | None |
| 24/7 Fitness | About S$90 to S$110 a month | 1 to 12 months |
| Anytime Fitness | About S$105 to S$125 a month | Often 12 to 18 months |
| Pure Fitness, Virgin Active | About S$210 to S$265 a month | Varies |
Worked example: a year at a chain at S$115 a month costs S$1,380. An ActiveSG annual peak pass costs S$300, a difference of S$1,080. The chain may still be worth it for classes, location or opening hours; just know what you are paying for.
What to check before you sign
- The contract length, and the price after any promotion ends.
- Joining, admin and key-card fees, and whether the quote includes GST.
- The notice period for cancelling, and whether it must be written.
- Whether you can freeze the membership for illness, pregnancy or travel.
- What happens if your outlet closes or moves.
- Whether personal training is sold as a large prepaid package. If so, buy the smallest one.
How to cancel a gym membership
- Find your contract and note the minimum term, notice period and any early termination fee.
- Send written notice by email or the gym’s official form, and keep a copy with the date.
- Ask for written confirmation of your last billing date.
- Stop any recurring card charge only after the notice period, or you may owe arrears.
- If the gym keeps charging or refuses a valid cancellation, contact CASE; disputes up to S$20,000 can go to the Small Claims Tribunals.
The WahLiao Verdict
Start with ActiveSG entries for a month and see how often you really go. If you need a chain, choose monthly billing over a big prepaid package, sign the shortest contract you can stomach, and ignore “today only” offers. Put every cancellation in writing. The Ministry of Trade and Industry’s consumer protection review panel, which is looking at prepayment protection, is due to report later this year; until then, the safest money is money you have not handed over yet.
Questions people ask
Is there a cooling-off period for a gym membership?
Not for an ordinary sign-up at the gym. A five-day period may apply to direct sales above S$50, such as one made at your home, workplace or a roadshow.
My gym closed. Can I get my money back?
If the business is in liquidation, you become a creditor and may recover little. Contact CASE, which has been working with the liquidator for True Fitness members.
Can a gym charge me after I cancel?
Only what your contract allows, such as the notice period or an agreed early termination fee. Ask for the sum in writing.
Was I pressured into signing?
Exploiting a consumer or misleading them can be an unfair practice under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act. Write down what was said and contact CASE.
