Nasi padang is white rice with your choice of dishes from a glass counter full of curries, sambals and vegetables, in the style of the Minangkabau people of Padang, West Sumatra. There’s no fixed menu price: your plate is priced dish by dish. You pay for the rice plus each item you point to, and meat and seafood cost more than vegetables. Beef rendang, fried chicken and fish are usually the priciest choices; sayur lodeh, sambal goreng and begedil are cheaper. As of 2026, a typical plate costs about S$7 to S$18, depending on what and how much you choose.
All that colour behind the glass is a joy, and with a little know-how, so is the bill. Here’s how it works.
Quick facts
- Name: from the city of Padang in West Sumatra, Indonesia; closely linked with Minangkabau cooking.
- How it’s sold: point at the dishes you want; the server builds your plate.
- Pricing: rice plus each dish; protein costs more than vegetables, and portion size matters.
- Typical plate: about S$7 to S$18 in 2026; simpler plates at some stalls cost less.
- Classic dishes: beef rendang, ayam bakar, sayur lodeh, sambal goreng, begedil, ikan asam pedas.
- Gravy: you can ask for curry gravy over your rice; the price on the till is what counts, so ask if unsure.
What’s in the counter
| Dish | What it is | Price band |
|---|---|---|
| Beef rendang | Beef slow-cooked in coconut milk and spices until dark and dry | Higher |
| Ayam bakar or ayam goreng | Grilled or fried chicken, sometimes with green chilli | Higher |
| Ikan asam pedas, sambal sotong | Fish in sour-spicy tamarind gravy; squid in chilli | Higher |
| Sambal goreng | Stir-fried tempeh, tofu and long beans in chilli paste | Lower |
| Sayur lodeh | Vegetables in a light coconut curry | Lower |
| Begedil, tahu telur, terung belado | Potato patty; tofu omelette; eggplant in chilli | Lower to middle |
| Gulai daun singkong, bendi | Cassava leaves in curry; okra | Lower |
The price bands are a general guide: every stall sets its own prices, and big or premium pieces cost more.
How to order: what you can say
| You can say | What it means |
|---|---|
| “Nasi, one” (rice, one plate) | Start with the rice; then point to your dishes |
| “Rendang, sambal goreng, sayur lodeh” | One meat and two vegetables: a balanced, mid-priced plate |
| “Kuah, please” or “more gravy” | Curry gravy ladled over the rice |
| “Half rice” or “more rice” | Less or more rice; some stalls charge for extra |
| “How much is that one?” | Ask the price of a dish before it goes on the plate |
| “Bungkus” | Take away, wrapped |
How a plate adds up
- Rice: the base, a small part of the bill.
- Your protein: one piece of rendang, chicken or fish is usually the biggest single item.
- Vegetables: each one adds a smaller amount; two veg are a common choice.
- Extras: a second meat, an egg or a big piece of fish can push a plate past S$15.
- The total: the server or cashier adds it up; ask for the total before you pay if it isn’t shown.
A 2026 round-up of well-known nasi padang stalls found average plates between about S$7 and S$18. A March 2025 guide found some plates from about S$5 at simpler stalls, with restaurant sets for two at around S$30 or more. Air-conditioned restaurants may add service charge and GST.
The WahLiao Verdict
Build your plate as one star and two supports: one protein you love, often the rendang, plus two vegetables, and a ladle of gravy on the rice. Ask the price before a second meat goes on. You’ll eat beautifully, the plate stays in the lower half of the price range, and you’ll leave room to try something new next time.
Questions people ask
Why did my plate cost more than my friend’s?
Each dish has its own price, and meat, seafood and larger pieces cost more. Two plates that look similar can differ by several dollars.
Is nasi padang the same as economic rice?
The idea is similar: rice plus dishes you choose, priced item by item. Nasi padang is Malay and Indonesian-style cooking, usually with more coconut, spice and slow-cooked dishes.
Is nasi padang halal?
Nasi padang stalls are usually Malay or Muslim-run, and many are halal-certified. Check for the certificate if it matters; see what the signs at a stall mean.
When is the best time to go?
Late morning to lunch, when the counter is full. Popular dishes, especially rendang, can sell out by mid-afternoon.
