Visiting Sri Lanka: The ETA and What It Costs

Singaporeans visiting Sri Lanka need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), and the good news is the price: nothing. Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration says nationals of Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore, under bilateral reciprocal agreements, are required to obtain an ETA prior to arrival, and that it is processed free of charge. The tourist ETA lasts 30 days from your first arrival, with double entry: leave for the Maldives and come back, and you get the balance of those 30 days. Apply on the official site eta.gov.lk, and carry a passport valid for at least six months.

Tea country, Galle Fort, leopards in Yala: Sri Lanka is a short hop from Changi, and the entry paperwork is lighter than many expect.

Quick facts

  • ETA needed: yes, before arrival, for Singapore passport holders.
  • Cost for Singaporeans: free, under a bilateral reciprocal arrangement (as of October 2026).
  • Tourist ETA: 30 days from first arrival, double entry.
  • Second entry: only the balance of the original 30 days is granted.
  • Official site: eta.gov.lk, run for the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
  • Passport: valid for at least six months.

What it costs, and why it is free

From 25 May 2026 Sri Lanka began issuing free 30-day tourist ETAs to nationals of 40 countries. Singapore is not counted in that headline 40, but it sits alongside Maldives and Seychelles in a separate group with reciprocal agreements, whose ETAs are also processed free. In practice the Singaporean result is the same: apply, pay nothing, travel.

If a website asks for card details for a Singaporean tourist ETA, stop. You are not on the government site, or you have picked the wrong nationality in the form.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Go to eta.gov.lk (type it in; do not click search adverts).
  2. Choose Apply for a Tourist ETA, individual or group.
  3. Enter passport details exactly as printed, plus your travel dates and address in Sri Lanka.
  4. Select Singapore as nationality and check that no fee is shown.
  5. Submit and note your reference number.
  6. Save the ETA approval email on your phone and print a copy for check-in.
  7. On arrival, show your passport and ETA approval at immigration.

Apply a week or more ahead. Sri Lanka’s ETA system has had periodic technical problems in the past two years, and you do not want to discover an outage the night before you fly.

How double entry works: a worked example

Siew Ling lands in Colombo on Sunday 20 December 2026. She flies to the Maldives on Saturday 26 December, returns to Colombo on Tuesday 29 December, and flies home to Singapore on Sunday 3 January 2027.

StepWhat happens
First entry, 20 DecemberHer 30-day ETA clock starts
Leaves 26 DecemberFirst entry used
Second entry, 29 DecemberGranted only the balance of the 30 days
Leaves 3 JanuaryTotal span 15 days, well within 30

One free ETA covers the whole trip. Had she planned a third entry, she would need a new ETA.

The WahLiao Verdict

For Singaporeans, Sri Lanka’s ETA is a free formality, so the only way to overpay is to use the wrong website. Apply on eta.gov.lk a week or two before you fly, check the fee field shows zero, keep the approval email handy, and use the double entry if you are pairing Sri Lanka with the Maldives.

Questions people ask

Do Singaporeans need an ETA if it is free?

Yes. Free does not mean exempt; the Department of Immigration and Emigration says Singaporeans must obtain an ETA before arrival.

How long can I stay?

30 days from first arrival on a tourist ETA. Extensions are handled by the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo; check its site for current terms.

Can I apply on arrival instead?

Applying online before you fly is the requirement for Singaporeans and the safer choice, since airlines may check before boarding.

What if a site charges me US$50?

Then it is not the free government channel for a Singapore passport. Close it and go to eta.gov.lk directly.
