Johor Bahru Day Trips: What to Do, Where to Eat and Avoiding the Jams

The best Johor Bahru day trip is built around the clock, not the map: cross early in the morning and come back before the evening rush, because ICA reported waits of up to three hours for car travellers at recent peaks. Singaporeans need no visa for up to 30 days and are exempt from the MDAC arrival card, but MFA says your passport must be valid for more than six months on entry. Use QR-code clearance in the MyICA app on the Singapore side. In JB itself, keep it tight: the old town around Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and the Johor Ancient Temple, one bigger attraction such as Skyscape or the Royal Botanical Gardens, and a couple of well-chosen meals.

JB is close enough for lunch and different enough to feel like a holiday. A little planning turns it from a queue into a lovely day out.

Quick facts

  • Visa: none for Singaporeans for up to 30 days.
  • MDAC: Singapore passport holders are exempt at all entry points.
  • Passport: must be valid for more than six months at entry.
  • Singapore side: passport-free QR clearance with the MyICA app.
  • Malaysian side: QR clearance via the official MyNIISe app at selected checkpoints, for eligible travellers.
  • Best timing: early mornings and late evenings, away from long weekends and school holidays.

How to avoid the jams

  1. Pick the day: a weekday beats a weekend, and ordinary weekends beat long weekends and school holidays, when ICA issues heavy-traffic advisories.
  2. Pick the hour: ICA advises travelling during non-peak hours such as early mornings and late evenings.
  3. Check before you leave: LTA’s OneMotoring, the expressway signs on the BKE and AYE, ICA’s Facebook and X accounts, and radio traffic reports.
  4. Clear faster: generate your QR code in MyICA. Families of up to four with children under six, and wheelchair users, can use QR codes at Special Assistance Lanes when travelling by bus.
  5. On the Malaysian side: if eligible, use MyNIISe from official app stores, still carry your physical passport, and check your entry was recorded.

ICA has also warned that security checks stepped up since 28 February 2026 can lengthen waits at peak times. The RTS Link between Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar is targeted to open around the end of 2026; until it does, the bus, the KTM Shuttle Tebrau and driving are the main ways across.

Where to eat

JB’s food is half the reason to go. Some names that come up again and again in itineraries, listed for information rather than as recommendations:

  • Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee: operating since 1919 and known for wood-fired banana cake; open daily 7.30am to 5pm as reported. Go early.
  • It Roo Cafe, Jalan Dhoby: an old-town kopitiam known for chicken chop.
  • Restaurant Teck Sing, Taman Sentosa: family-run, known for paper-baked chicken and curry fish head; reported closed on Thursdays.
  • Yummy Nasi Lemak House, Taman Abad: nasi lemak and kuih; reported closed on Wednesdays.
  • Bazar JB, Jalan Segget: street snacks in the evening.

A worked example: a Tuesday in JB

Staying safe

MFA advises carrying bags on the side away from the road, keeping little cash, sticking to well-lit areas at night and taking care with ride-hailing and public transport. Never carry a parcel across the border for a stranger: Malaysia’s drug penalties include death.

The WahLiao Verdict

Go on a weekday if you can, cross by 8am, and plan only three things: one sight, one attraction and one memorable meal. Set up MyICA before you leave home and check your passport has more than six months left. Then relax: the trick to JB is not seeing everything, it is not spending the day in a queue.

Questions people ask

Do Singaporeans need to fill in the MDAC for JB?

No. MFA says Singapore passport holders are exempt at all entry points, though it is needed if you later enrol fingerprints for e-gate clearance.

When is the Causeway quietest?

ICA points to early mornings and late evenings outside long weekends and school holidays. Check OneMotoring before you set off.

Is the RTS Link open yet?

Not as of October 2026. Both governments have pointed to the end of 2026; fares had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.

Can I drive in for the day?

Yes, but Singapore-registered cars need a Vehicle Entry Permit, and you must observe Singapore’s fuel tank rule on the way out.
