Singapore passport holders can enter Laos without a visa for short visits of up to 30 days, according to Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so most Singaporean holidaymakers never need the Lao e-Visa or a visa on arrival. What you do need, if you fly into Vientiane (Wattay), Luang Prabang or Pakse, or cross the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I, is the Lao Digital Immigration Form, submitted within three days before you enter or leave. Once inside, the Laos-China Railway turns what used to be a long mountain road into a train ride of roughly two hours from Vientiane to Luang Prabang. Tickets go on sale about seven days ahead and the cheap seats go fast, so book early.
Laos rewards the unhurried: monks at dawn in Luang Prabang, river light in Vang Vieng, a café culture in Vientiane. Here is the paperwork and the train, sorted, so you can get on with the slow part.
Quick facts
- Visa: none needed for Singapore passport holders for stays of up to 30 days.
- Arrival form: the Lao Digital Immigration Form at immigration.gov.la, within three days before entry or exit at the main airports and Friendship Bridge I.
- e-Visa: for nationalities that need a visa; usually processed in about 3 working days.
- Cash limit: no more than US$10,000 in cash in or out.
- Train tickets: official LCR Ticket app, sales open about 7 days before travel.
- Vientiane to Luang Prabang: about 1 hour 45 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the train.
Do Singaporeans need the e-Visa or a visa on arrival?
For a normal holiday, no. MFA states that Singapore passport holders may enter Laos with no visa for short-term visits of up to 30 days, and must not work without proper documentation from the Lao authorities. The e-Visa and visa on arrival exist for travellers whose nationality is not visa-exempt, which matters if you are travelling with a friend or family member on another passport.
| Route into Laos | Who it is for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Visa-free entry | Singapore passport holders | Up to 30 days; leave within the period stamped on entry. |
| Lao e-Visa (laoevisa.gov.la) | Nationalities that need a visa | Apply and pay online; usually about 3 working days; fee shown by the site’s calculator and non-refundable. |
| Visa on arrival | Nationalities that need a visa | Available at designated checkpoints; fees vary by nationality, so check with the Lao Embassy before relying on it. |
The official e-Visa site lists nine entry points that accept it, including Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports, Friendship Bridges I, II and IV, the Boten checkpoint and both Boten and Khamsavath (Vientiane) railway stations. That last pair is useful for anyone arriving by train from China.
The Lao Digital Immigration Form, step by step
- Within three days before you fly in, go to immigration.gov.la (the official site, not a paid agent).
- Fill in your passport, flight and accommodation details.
- Save the QR code issued on submission; a screenshot is wise in case you have no data on landing.
- Repeat the form within three days before you leave, as MFA notes it applies on departure too.
MFA’s guidance says the form has applied since 1 September 2025 at Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports and the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I. At other land crossings, ask the checkpoint or check the Lao immigration site before you go.
Riding the Laos-China Railway
The line runs north from Vientiane through Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang to Boten on the Chinese border. There are faster electric trains and a slower, cheaper passenger train. Sample second-class fares reported by a travel guide updated in December 2025 are below; treat them as a guide and confirm in the app.
| Vientiane to Luang Prabang | Typical time | Second-class fare (reported) |
|---|---|---|
| Faster domestic train | About 1h45 to 2h20 | 330,000 kip |
| International (Vientiane-Kunming) train | About 1h45 | 393,000 kip |
| Slower passenger train (hard seat) | About 2h50 | 234,000 kip |
Vientiane to Vang Vieng takes about an hour. The stations sit well outside town: roughly 16 km from central Vientiane and 12 km from Luang Prabang, so budget time and a taxi or minivan at each end. Security screening is airport-style; arrive 30 to 60 minutes early.
How to book
- Download the official LCR Ticket app and register with your passport details.
- Seven days before your travel date, search your route and pick a train and class.
- Pay in-app (a small transaction fee applies) and screenshot the QR code.
- If the app fails, town ticket offices in Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang sell at standard fares plus a small commission; resellers can sell further ahead for a few dollars more.
Going on to China
A daily cross-border train has run between Vientiane and Kunming since April 2023. Laos’s national news agency KPL reported a journey time of about 10 hours 30 minutes, including immigration and customs at Boten (Laos) and Mohan (China), and launch fares of 760 yuan in first class and 470 yuan in second. You need your passport and a paper ticket or printout to cross. Remember Laos is one hour behind Yunnan.
Money and rules worth knowing
- Change money only at commercial banks or licensed money changers; MFA notes banks do not sell US dollars.
- Taking antiques, including old Buddha images, or endangered wildlife out of Laos is illegal.
- Drones need prior approval, and photographing military areas is prohibited.
- Drug offences are treated very seriously.
- Buy alcohol from licensed sources only, to avoid counterfeit or tainted drinks.
- Be wary of unsolicited, too-good job offers, especially around the Golden Triangle.
The WahLiao Verdict
Skip the visa sites entirely if you hold a Singapore passport and stay 30 days or less; spend that energy on the Digital Immigration Form and on setting a phone alarm for seven days before your train date. Book the faster train between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, screenshot every QR code, and leave generous time for the long rides to and from the stations. That is the whole trick.
Questions people ask
Can I stay longer than 30 days?
Not on visa-free entry. For a longer stay, check the right visa with the Embassy of the Lao PDR in Singapore before you travel rather than hoping to sort it out on arrival.
Can I buy train tickets at the station on the day?
Sometimes, but do not count on it. Popular trains often sell out days ahead, so book in the app as soon as sales open.
Do I need a visa for China if I take the train to Kunming?
Singaporeans currently enjoy visa-free entry to China for short stays; check the latest terms before you go, as China sets and reviews them.
Is travel insurance needed?
It is not an entry condition, but MFA advises cover that includes emergency medical evacuation to a third country, which is sensible given healthcare limits outside the cities.
