The best way to see Little India is to walk Serangoon Road from end to end. Start at Little India MRT and Tekka Centre (665 Buffalo Road), the hawker centre, wet market and clothing market in one building. Head north past the Indian Heritage Centre on Campbell Lane (free for Singaporeans and PRs, closed Mondays) to the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple at 141 Serangoon Road, then on to the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple at 397 Serangoon Road, near Farrer Park MRT. The whole stretch is about 1.5km. Temples are free; dress modestly and leave your shoes at the door. Go in the morning, when the temples are open and the market is busiest.
Little India rewards slow feet: the garland stalls, spice shops and gold jewellers along the way are half the joy. Here is how to pace it.

The temples: hours and what to know
Hindu temples close for part of the day, so time matters. Hours as of October 2026:
| Temple | Address | Hours | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sri Veeramakaliamman | 141 Serangoon Road | Listed as 5.30am–2pm and 4pm–9pm daily; confirm at the temple | Built by Bengali labourers in 1881; a conserved building |
| Sri Srinivasa Perumal | 397 Serangoon Road | Mon–Fri 5am–11am and 6pm–8.30pm; Sat 5am–11.30am and 5.30pm–9pm; Sun 5am–11.30am and 6pm–8.30pm | Founded 1855; present temple completed 1966; National Monument since 1978 |
The Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple is also where the Thaipusam procession begins each year, so expect crowds and road closures on that day. Inside any temple, walk clockwise, do not point your feet at the shrines, and ask before photographing worshippers or priests.
Tekka Centre: what’s inside
| Level | What you’ll find | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Ground floor, hawker centre | Biryani, thosai, prata, Indian Muslim and Chinese stalls | Go before noon on weekends for a seat |
| Ground floor, wet market | Fresh fish, meat, vegetables and spices | Busiest and freshest in the early morning |
| Upper floor | Saree, textile and clothing shops, tailors | Many stalls open later in the morning |
Like every NEA hawker centre, Tekka Centre shuts for a day or two of cleaning from time to time. Its latest closure was 21 to 22 September 2026, so check NEA’s published closure list before a weekend trip.
Shopping along the way
Little India Arcade, a row of conserved shophouses opposite Tekka Centre, sells henna, bangles, incense and snacks. Further along, the side streets off Serangoon Road hold spice traders, saree shops and gold jewellers, and Mustafa Centre on Syed Alwi Road is the area’s big department store. Prices for gold follow the daily market rate plus a workmanship charge, so ask for both figures before you buy.
The WahLiao Verdict
Arrive at Tekka Centre by 8.30am on a weekday, eat breakfast there, and you will reach both temples well inside their morning hours. Save the Indian Heritage Centre for the hottest part of the day, never on a Monday, and keep a light scarf in your bag. It is one of the richest free walks in Singapore, and the only thing you will spend on is food.
