Malaysia’s west coast is now one continuous electric railway. KTMB’s ETS (Electric Train Service) runs from JB Sentral through KL Sentral and Ipoh to Butterworth and Padang Besar, after the line reached JB Sentral in December 2025. JB Sentral to KL Sentral takes about 4.5 hours, with standard fares reported at roughly RM73 to RM109 one way as of June 2026, and KL Sentral to Butterworth (for Penang) takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. From Singapore, the KTM Shuttle Tebrau crosses from Woodlands to JB Sentral in about five minutes. Tickets usually open 30 days ahead on KTMB’s online system and app, and weekend seats can sell out within hours.

Trains are the comfortable way to see Malaysia: no airport queues, city-centre stations and a window seat on the countryside. Here is how the network fits together.

Quick facts

  • ETS reach: JB Sentral to Padang Besar on the Thai border, via KL Sentral, Ipoh and Butterworth.
  • JB Sentral-KL Sentral: about 4 hours 20 minutes to 4.5 hours.
  • Service types: Platinum (limited stops), Express (fewest stops) and Gold (more stops); Silver suspended from 1 January 2026.
  • Business class: 2+1 seats with meals on selected trains; reported RM150 to RM170 JB-KL.
  • Shuttle Tebrau: Woodlands to JB Sentral, reported S$5 one way.
  • Booking: KTMB’s online ticketing (KITS) and app; seats are reserved on a specific train.

Through trains also run from JB Sentral all the way to Butterworth and Padang Besar: KTMB extended a Gold service to JB Sentral on 1 January 2026 and Platinum services on 24 February 2026. Beyond the electric line, KTM Komuter serves the Klang Valley and areas like Seremban and Tampin, and Intercity trains on the East Coast Line, the so-called Jungle Railway, head from Gemas towards Kelantan. Check KTMB for current East Coast timetables.

What the fares look like

JB Sentral-KL Sentral, one wayReported fare (June 2026)
Gold, standardRM73 to RM81
Platinum, standardRM96 to RM109
Business (Gold or Platinum)RM150 to RM170
Shuttle Tebrau, Woodlands-JB SentralS$5

Fares depend on distance, service and passenger type, and KTMB runs promotions; one 2026 guide reports discounts of around 30% on eligible Gold and Platinum standard fares from Monday to Thursday, excluding holidays. For Penang, KL Sentral to Butterworth is reported at about RM35 to RM80 depending on class and timing. Always confirm on KTMB’s site.

How to book, step by step

  1. Create an account on KTMB’s online ticketing (online.ktmb.com.my) or its app.
  2. Thirty days before travel, search your route and choose the train, service and class.
  3. Pick your seat and pay; charge in ringgit on a low-fee card rather than accepting conversion to SGD.
  4. Keep the QR code ticket on your phone for boarding.
  5. From Singapore, book the Shuttle Tebrau separately on KTMB’s shuttle site; a return trip means four bookings.

A worked example: Singapore to KL by rail

LegTimeReported cost
Shuttle Tebrau, Woodlands to JB SentralAbout 5 minutes, plus 30 to 45 minutes for immigrationS$5
Buffer at JB Sentral60 to 90 minutes suggestedNone
ETS Gold, JB Sentral to KL SentralAbout 4.5 hoursRM73 to RM81
Total from WoodlandsAbout 6 to 7 hours with the full buffer; nearer 5 to 5.5 hours with a tight connectionS$5 plus RM73 to RM81

That is slower than flying gate to gate but often similar door to door, and far kinder on the back than a coach in Friday traffic. Remember your passport must have more than six months’ validity to enter Malaysia.

The WahLiao Verdict

Set a reminder for 30 days before you travel, book the Shuttle and the ETS together, and choose Platinum or Express when time matters, Gold when price does. Travel Monday to Thursday if your dates allow, and leave a generous buffer at JB Sentral. With the line now electric from JB to the Thai border, the train is the most relaxing way north.

Questions people ask

Can I take the train from Singapore to KL without changing?

No. You take the Shuttle Tebrau to JB Sentral, clear immigration on both sides, then board the ETS to KL Sentral.

How early do tickets go on sale?

Usually 30 days before departure. Weekend and holiday trains can sell out within hours of release.

Can I buy tickets at the Woodlands station?

The counter is reported to be cashless and to accept only KTM’s own wallet, so buying online is easier.

Is business class worth it?

For a long run such as JB to Butterworth, the wider 2+1 seats and included meal can be worth the premium; for shorter hops, standard class is comfortable.
