Mooncakes are the round cakes of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which fell on Friday 25 September 2026 and next falls on Wednesday 15 September 2027. It is not a public holiday in Singapore. There are two main kinds. Baked mooncakes have a thin golden pastry around a dense filling such as lotus seed paste, red bean or mixed nuts, often with salted egg yolks. Snowskin mooncakes are unbaked, with a soft, chilled glutinous rice skin, and must be kept cold. Most are sold in boxes of two, four or eight. In the 2026 season, many hotel boxes of four were listed at roughly $88 to $108 before discounts, and early-bird and bank-card offers of 20% to 40% were common.

A mooncake box is part gift, part tradition and part treat. Here is how to choose well and pay sensibly.

Quick facts

  • Festival dates: 25 September 2026 (Friday); 15 September 2027 (Wednesday).
  • Public holiday: no, but malls and Chinatown decorate with lanterns.
  • Baked: pastry skin; lotus paste, red bean, nuts; single or double yolk.
  • Snowskin: unbaked, chilled skin; fruit, durian, chocolate and other modern fillings.
  • Box sizes: mostly 2, 4 or 8 pieces; minis come in larger counts.
  • Discounts: early-bird offers in 2026 ranged up to 40% and shrank closer to the festival.

How mooncake boxes are priced

Price depends on the maker, the filling and the box. Hotels and restaurants charge more, partly for premium fillings and partly for elaborate gift boxes. Traditional bakeries are usually cheaper. Listed prices from the 2026 season give a sense of the range:

Early-bird and card discounts, with a worked example

Hotels open orders weeks before the festival. In 2026, early-bird offers of 25% to 40% typically ended in late July or August, then gave way to smaller discounts, often only for certain bank cards, until the festival day. Some sellers also offer bulk discounts for corporate orders.

  1. Box price: a box of four listed at $98.
  2. Early-bird 25% off: $98 × 0.75 = $73.50.
  3. Two boxes: $73.50 × 2 = $147, against $196 at full price.
  4. Saving: $196 − $147 = $49.

Read the terms: some discounts apply only to certain box sizes, only online, or only with specific cards, and collection dates may be fixed.

The WahLiao Verdict

Decide who the box is for before you shop. For elders, a classic baked lotus paste with single yolk is rarely wrong; for younger relatives, a snowskin box is more fun. If you buy several boxes, order in the early-bird window, usually by late July or August, and check which card gets the best rate. For your own table, a traditional bakery box gives you the same pleasure for far less. Mark 15 September 2027 in the diary, and plan your orders from early summer.

Questions people ask

Why are mooncakes round?

They are shaped like the full moon, a design dating to the festival’s roots as a harvest offering to the moon.

How long do snowskin mooncakes keep?

Not long. Keep them chilled and follow the date on the box; most makers advise eating them within days.

Are mooncakes halal?

Some are. Several hotels and bakeries sell MUIS halal-certified mooncakes; check the seller’s certification for the specific product.

Why is the box so expensive?

Premium fillings, hotel kitchens and gift packaging all add cost. A plain box from a traditional bakery costs much less.
