Volunteering in Singapore: How to Find Opportunities and Get Started

Starting to volunteer in Singapore takes about ten minutes. Search Giving.sg, the national platform to donate, volunteer and fundraise for more than 600 registered non-profits, or the Government’s Volunteer.gov.sg search tool. If you would rather help close to home, sign up with your town’s SG Cares Volunteer Centre: there are 24, one for each town, run by social service organisations, and together they recruited, trained and deployed more than 100,000 volunteers over five years, according to MCCY. You can also go straight to agency schemes such as NParks’ OneMillionTrees, the NEA Volunteer Corps or People’s Association community volunteering. Begin with a one-off session, then commit to something regular.

Giving time is one of the warmest things you can do here, and there is a role for every schedule, from a single Saturday morning to a weekly commitment.

How to get started, step by step

  1. Pick a cause. Seniors, children, animals, the environment, migrant workers or the arts: choose what moves you.
  2. Be honest about time. A monthly two-hour slot you keep beats a weekly one you drop.
  3. Search and sign up on Giving.sg, Volunteer.gov.sg or your town’s Volunteer Centre.
  4. Attend the briefing. Many roles, especially with seniors or children, include training or screening first.
  5. Start with a one-off session, then commit to a regular role once you find the right fit.
  6. Bring a friend or colleague. It is easier to keep going together, and employers may support it through the Corporate Volunteer Scheme.

The WahLiao Verdict

Open Giving.sg tonight, filter by a cause you care about and book one session this month. If you want to help your own neighbourhood, contact your town’s SG Cares Volunteer Centre instead. Start small, show up reliably, and let it grow. The best volunteer is not the busiest one, but the one who keeps coming back.
