Free performances at the Esplanade happen every day. The Concourse by the main entrance hosts free shows, mostly in the evenings, and the DBS Foundation Outdoor Theatre on the Marina Bay waterfront has free performances every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holiday. No tickets are needed: you just turn up. The Esplanade says it stages close to 3,500 performances and activities a year, and about 70% are free. Each month usually has a free themed series. As of October 2026 that is Popaholic (1 to 30 October), after Crossing Borders in September and Red Dot August. The roof terrace and waterfront promenade are free to visit too.
It is one of the loveliest free evenings in the city: music by the water, the skyline behind the stage, and nobody asking for a ticket. Here is how it works.

What’s on: the monthly free series
Much of the free programme is grouped into a theme for the month. The recent run, as listed by the Esplanade:
| Month (2026) | Free series | The idea |
|---|---|---|
| August | Red Dot August | Singapore through music, theatre, poetry and film |
| September | Crossing Borders | Music from the Middle East, Asia, Europe and America |
| October | Popaholic | A celebration of popular music |
The bigger festivals, which last three to ten days, also add free events alongside their ticketed shows. Some festival performances, the ticketed theatre and concert hall shows, and paid workshops are not free, so read the price line on each listing.
How to catch a free show
- Check the calendar. Go to the Esplanade’s What’s On page and filter for free programmes on your date.
- Pick your space. For the open-air, waterfront mood, choose a Friday, Saturday or Sunday at the Outdoor Theatre. On weekdays, the Concourse is your stage.
- Arrive early. Seats are open, and popular acts fill the 450 seats at the Outdoor Theatre; there is standing room for more.
- Plan for weather. The Outdoor Theatre is open to the sky, so check the forecast and bring a small umbrella.
- Make an evening of it. Walk the waterfront promenade or go up to the roof terrace for the view, both free.
Is it good for children?
Yes. The Esplanade itself recommends the Outdoor Theatre’s weekend shows to families, and the open-air, no-ticket setting makes it easy to leave early if a little one gets restless. PIP’s PLAYbox gives under-12s an indoor arts space during the day, and PIP’s Trail is a free self-guided digital treasure hunt around the building. Family-friendly ticketed shows are separate and listed under the Esplanade’s children’s programmes.
The WahLiao Verdict
Make it a Friday or Saturday evening ritual: check the listing at lunchtime, grab dinner nearby, and settle into the Outdoor Theatre seats twenty minutes before the start. The quality is often far better than “free” suggests, and the setting is one money cannot improve. If the weather turns, slip inside to the Concourse, where something is usually on.
