A worked example: one household’s monthly bill

A family keeps Netflix Standard, Disney+ Standard and HBO Max Standard, all paid monthly where possible.

  1. Netflix Standard: $22.98.
  2. Disney+ Standard: $18.98.
  3. HBO Max Standard on the annual plan: $129.98 ÷ 12 = about $10.83.
  4. Total: about $52.79 a month, or roughly $633 a year.

Switch Disney+ to its annual plan ($159.98, about $13.33 a month) and the monthly total falls to about $47.14, saving roughly $68 a year. Rotate instead, keeping just one service at a time and switching every few months, and the bill can drop to $23 or less.

How to pay less

  • Go annual for the services you never cancel. Disney+ shows savings of about 29% to 31% on yearly plans.
  • Rotate the rest. Subscribe for the season you want, then cancel before renewal.
  • Check your telco bundles. Mobile and broadband plans sometimes include a streaming service or offer it as a cheaper add-on.
  • Watch for contracts. Pay TV plans may lock you in for 24 months, with charges for ending early.
  • Use free tiers. meWATCH and Viu cover a lot of local and Asian content at no cost, with ads.

The WahLiao Verdict

Pick one anchor service the whole household uses, pay for it annually, and rotate everything else. Before signing any pay TV contract, ask yourself whether you will still want it in month 24. And once a quarter, scroll through your card statement for subscriptions you have forgotten; it is the easiest money you will ever save.
