Buying a Fridge: Sizes, Energy Ratings and Getting It Through an HDB Door

A couple in a 3- or 4-room HDB flat usually needs a fridge of about 250 to 350 litres; a family of four, about 350 to 450 litres. Prices run from under S$400 for a compact top-freezer to well above S$3,000 for a large French-door or multi-door model. Fridges carry an NEA energy label rated 1 to 4 ticks, and since 1 April 2025 new fridges must meet a 3-tick minimum. Before you fall in love with a model, measure: many HDB lift openings are around 0.8m wide and internal doorways about 0.8m clear, while family fridges are often 70 to 83cm wide.

The fridge is the one appliance that never rests, so a good choice pays off in every meal and every bill. The best choice is also one that actually reaches your kitchen.

Quick facts

  • Energy labels on fridges have been mandatory since 1 January 2008.
  • Minimum standard: 3 ticks since 1 April 2025, on a 1 to 4-tick scale.
  • The label’s annual cost assumes 24-hour running at 27 cents per kWh.
  • Couple: about 250 to 350 litres. Family of four: about 350 to 450 litres.
  • HDB main door leaf: about 0.9m; lifts and internal doors: often around 0.8m clear.
  • Leave a few centimetres of air at the back and top for ventilation.

Which type and size?

TypeTypical capacityPrice tierSuits
Single-door / miniUnder about 120LEntryBedrooms, singles, offices
Top-freezer two-doorAbout 200 to 320LEntry to midCouples, small kitchens
Bottom-freezer two-doorAbout 250 to 380LMidCouples and small families who use the fridge more than the freezer
Side-by-sideAbout 500 to 600LMid to premiumLarger families; needs a wide space
Multi-door / French doorAbout 550 to 700LPremiumBulk buyers and keen cooks

Bigger is not always better: an over-sized, half-empty fridge wastes space and money. Batch cooks and bulk buyers should size up; small households who shop often can size down.

Energy ratings and running cost

Ignore the ticks alone and look at the annual kWh and annual cost printed on the label, because ticks are judged against capacity. A larger 4-tick fridge can cost more to run than a smaller 3-tick one, or less.

Worked example

Fridge A uses 350kWh a year; Fridge B, 450kWh. At the label’s 27 cents per kWh, A costs S$94.50 a year and B S$121.50. Over ten years, that is S$945 against S$1,215: a S$270 difference. Use your own tariff from your electricity bill for a closer figure.

Getting it through an HDB door

Most delivery disappointments are measuring mistakes. Do this before you pay:

  1. Measure the clear opening of the main door and gate, not the door leaf. Hinges and the gate frame eat into the space.
  2. Measure the lift opening and the inside depth; tall fridges may need to tilt.
  3. Walk the route: corridor turns, the kitchen doorway, any step or ledge.
  4. Measure the fridge’s spot: width, height and depth including handles, then add 2 to 3cm each way for handling and air.
  5. Check door swing: can the fridge doors open fully against the wall so drawers slide out?
  6. Ask the retailer whether doors can be removed for delivery and whether the old fridge will be taken away.

The WahLiao Verdict

Buy for the household you have, not the one in the showroom: around 250 to 350 litres for a couple, 350 to 450 for a family of four. Compare annual kWh between finalists, not just ticks, and measure every door, lift and corner before you pay. A fridge that fits, sips power and lasts a decade is the real bargain.

Questions people ask

Can I still buy a 1- or 2-tick fridge?

Not new from a registered supplier. Since 1 April 2025 the minimum for fridges supplied in Singapore is 3 ticks. Older stock or second-hand units may rate lower.

What if the fridge does not fit through the door?

Delivery teams can sometimes remove fridge doors or the gate. If it still will not fit, you may face a re-delivery or restocking charge, so check the retailer’s policy first.

Do I need an inverter fridge?

Inverter compressors adjust their speed and tend to run more quietly and efficiently. Let the label’s annual kWh decide rather than the word on the door.

How much space should I leave around it?

A few centimetres at the back and at least the same above, plus room for doors to swing. The manual gives the brand’s exact figures.
