Every weekday in Singapore, somewhere, a supermarket takes a few per cent off a senior’s bill. At FairPrice in 2026 it is 3% for Pioneer Generation cardholders on Mondays, 2% for anyone aged 60 and above on Tuesdays, 3% for Pioneer and Merdeka Generation cardholders on Wednesdays, 3% for CHAS Blue cardholders on Thursdays and 3% for CHAS Orange cardholders on Fridays, each on up to $200 of shopping per transaction per day. Sheng Siong, Giant, Prime and Cold Storage run their own senior days, mostly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
That is the calendar. The more interesting number is the cap, because it tells you the most any of these schemes can ever be worth in a day: $4 at 2%, $6 at 3%, $8 at 4%. Small, yes. Over a year of weekly shops it becomes a few hundred dollars, which is real money in a household where someone has stopped drawing a salary.

FairPrice’s five discount days, explained
FairPrice was the first supermarket here to give seniors a regular discount, beginning with its Tuesday scheme in 2002, and the other chains followed. It now runs a scheme on every weekday, each for a different group.
- Monday, 3%: Pioneer Generation. For holders of the Pioneer Generation card, broadly Singapore citizens born in 1949 or earlier.
- Tuesday, 2%: seniors aged 60 and above. Show your NRIC.
- Wednesday, 3%: Pioneer and Merdeka Generation. The Merdeka Generation is, broadly, citizens born in the 1950s.
- Thursday, 3%: CHAS Blue cardholders.
- Friday, 3%: CHAS Orange cardholders. FairPrice says it is the only major retailer offering a CHAS Orange discount; the scheme is funded by its charity arm, FairPrice Foundation.
To claim, the eligible person can verify their details once on the FairPrice Group app through Myinfo and then pay with the app. Or they can show a physical or digital card at the cashier; the Singpass app holds digital Pioneer, Merdeka and CHAS cards. At self-checkout, choose the discount option on screen and show the card to the staff member who comes over. The discount covers up to $200 of purchases per transaction per day and leaves out statutory items such as gift vouchers, newspapers and tobacco.
NTUC Union and Link members still earn Linkpoints on top of the discount, which is the closest thing in Singapore grocery to having your cake and a small rebate on the cake.
Sheng Siong, Giant, Prime and Cold Storage
The other chains keep it simpler: one or two days, an age threshold of 60, and eligibility for Singapore citizens and permanent residents.
Sheng Siong has offered 4% off on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to citizens and PRs aged 60 and above, capped at $200 per receipt. Its published exclusions include infant formula, tobacco and alcohol, parking coupons, phone cards and Sheng Siong vouchers.
Giant has offered 4% on Tuesdays. Prime Supermarket has offered 4% on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cold Storage has offered 3% on Wednesdays.
Note what has changed hands. Cold Storage and Giant passed to Macrovalue after a deal announced in 2025, and a new owner is exactly when loyalty schemes get rewritten. If you shop there for the senior day, ask at customer service before you build a routine around it.
How much can a senior actually save?
Let the cap do the arithmetic.

A Pioneer Generation shopper at FairPrice has two 3% days, Monday and Wednesday, so two $100 shops a week also earn $6 a week, or $312 a year. And a household that splits one large shop across two discount days, keeping each under the cap, does better than one that crams $300 into a single trolley and receives the discount on only $200 of it.
Now the part that changes decisions. On a $200 basket, the difference between a 3% day and a 4% day is $2. The difference between the same basket at two different supermarkets can easily be larger than that, in either direction. So choose the supermarket for your basket first, and the day second. A 4% discount on a dearer basket is not a saving. It is a consolation.
Which day is best for seniors?
It depends on the card in the wallet, and one quiet fact helps. Every member of the Merdeka Generation was born in the 1950s, which makes all of them 66 or older in 2026, and every Pioneer is older still. So a Pioneer or Merdeka cardholder also qualifies for every scheme that simply asks for age 60 and above.
- Pioneer Generation: 3% at FairPrice on Monday or Wednesday, or the 60-and-above days elsewhere, including 4% at Sheng Siong on Tuesday or Wednesday.
- Merdeka Generation: 3% at FairPrice on Wednesday, or the 60-and-above days at the other chains.
- Aged 60 and above, no card: 2% at FairPrice on Tuesday; 4% at Sheng Siong on Tuesday or Wednesday, at Giant on Tuesday, and at Prime on Tuesday or Thursday.
- CHAS Blue or Orange: 3% at FairPrice on Thursday or Friday respectively.
Then the human rule, which outranks the table. The best day is the one on which the senior would go anyway. A discount that turns a pleasant weekly outing into an obligation, or sends an unsteady shopper into a busier aisle, is not worth 3%.
The rules that trip people up
- The cardholder must be there. The discount belongs to the senior, not to the card. Sending the card along with a grandchild does not work, and should not.
- The cap is per transaction, per day. A second receipt on the same day does not reset it.
- Some things are excluded. Tobacco and gift vouchers everywhere; at some chains, infant formula and alcohol too.
- It is an in-store benefit. FairPrice lists its supermarkets, Finest, Xtra and Unity pharmacies for the discount days. FairPrice Online earns Linkpoints but is not on the discount-day list.
- Stacking varies. Whether a senior discount combines with a particular promotion or payment method is each chain’s rule. Ask once, then you know.
Frequently asked questions
What age do you need to be for supermarket senior discounts in Singapore?
Sixty, for the general senior schemes at FairPrice (Tuesday), Sheng Siong, Giant, Prime and Cold Storage. The Pioneer Generation, Merdeka Generation and CHAS discounts go by card rather than by age.
Do permanent residents get senior discounts?
The general 60-and-above schemes have been open to Singapore citizens and permanent residents. The Pioneer and Merdeka Generation cards are for citizens.
Can a family member use a senior’s Pioneer Generation card?
No. The cardholder has to be present when the purchase is paid for, and staff may ask for identification.
Does the FairPrice senior discount work on FairPrice Online?
The discount days apply in FairPrice’s physical stores and Unity pharmacies. Linkpoints can be earned online. Check the FairPrice Group app for any online-only senior offer running at the time.
Will these discounts continue in 2027?
FairPrice has renewed its schemes every year, and the current run ends on 31 December 2026. Recent extensions have been announced in the second half of December. We will update this page when the 2027 schemes are confirmed.
