Every Singapore permanent resident needs a valid Re-Entry Permit (REP) to travel abroad and come back as a PR. Leave or stay overseas without one and you lose your PR status. Under rules in force since 1 December 2025, a PR who leaves without a valid REP, or whose REP expires while abroad, loses PR status if they do not apply within 180 days, or if that application is rejected. Renew or transfer your REP online through ICA’s e-Service with Singpass, before it expires.
The REP is the one piece of PR paperwork people forget, because you receive it with your PR approval and it runs quietly for years. Put its expiry date in your calendar now.

Why the REP matters
The REP lets a PR keep permanent residence while outside Singapore. ICA states that a PR who leaves or stays overseas without a valid REP loses PR status and is assessed for entry as a foreign visitor. Since 1 December 2025, the law sets a 180-day window: a PR loses status if they leave without a valid REP, or their REP lapses abroad, and they do not apply within 180 days, or they apply and are rejected, even if they are back in Singapore when the rejection comes.
Renewing and transferring
Apply, renew or transfer your REP online through ICA’s e-Service with Singpass, for yourself or your immediate family, before it expires; online applications are generally processed within a week. You need a passport with at least three months’ validity. If you change to a new passport of the same nationality, use the transfer function to update your REP, because ICA may only clear you as a PR if the REP carries your current passport details. ICA’s overseas missions list the fee as S$10 for each year or part of a year.
