New Year’s Eve at Marina Bay: Fireworks, Road Closures and Getting Home

New Year’s Eve at Marina Bay is built around one moment: the fireworks over the bay at the stroke of midnight. The countdown is organised by the government, with the URA running the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown. As of 4 October 2026, the arrangements for 31 December 2026 have not been announced, so everything below about roads and trains describes what happened last year (31 December 2025), clearly labelled. Last year, roads around the bay closed in stages from 6pm to 2am, police shut waterfront viewing areas from around 8pm once they filled, and MRT trains ran until roughly 2am. This year, 31 December falls on a Thursday and New Year’s Day on a Friday public holiday, giving a three-day weekend.

A big crowd, a bright sky and a long walk home: the night is wonderful if you plan for all three. Here is how it has worked, and what to watch for when this year’s details come out.

Quick facts

  • Fireworks: at midnight over Marina Bay.
  • 2026-27 plans: not yet announced as of 4 October 2026; watch the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown site, SPF and LTA in December.
  • Last year’s roads: staged closures from 6pm, 9pm and 11pm on 31 December, all reopening around 2am.
  • Last year’s crowds: police closed nine Marina Bay waterfront areas from around 8pm as they filled.
  • Last year’s trains: most MRT lines ran until about 2am; Bukit Panjang LRT and the Changi Airport branch were not extended.
  • Drones: banned in the temporary restricted area around the celebrations.

What has been announced for 2026-27?

Nothing specific yet. Visit Singapore lists a Marina Bay Countdown to 2027, but without a programme, times or locations. Road closures, train extensions and police arrangements are usually published in the last two weeks of December. Until then, treat any article quoting 2026-27 road closures or train times with suspicion.

For reference, last year’s celebration ran as ONE Countdown 2026, with four city-centre sites (Marina Bay, the Singapore Sports Hub, Sentosa and Clarke Quay), seven heartland sites (Boon Lay, Keat Hong, Marsiling, Nee Soon, Punggol, Tampines and Woodlands) and celebrations at migrant worker recreation centres. The Sports Hub ran a 35-minute fireworks display in four parts, the first around 9pm for families; Marina Bay’s display ended at midnight. Whether this year repeats that multi-site format is not yet known.

Which roads closed last year?

This is the pattern from 31 December 2025, as published ahead of the night. Expect something similar, but check this year’s official list.

From (31 Dec 2025)Roads affected (examples)Until
6pmBayfront Avenue towards Temasek Avenue and nearby streets, full closure; right lane of Esplanade Drive towards Nicoll Highway2am, 1 Jan (Esplanade Drive lane to 9pm, then fully closed)
9pmEsplanade Drive, Fullerton Road and Collyer Quay, full closure2am, 1 Jan
11pmBattery Road and parts of Nicoll Highway, full closure2am, 1 Jan
11.30pmBenjamin Sheares Bridge section, lane closure12.15am, 1 Jan

The open-air car park on Bayfront Avenue was also unavailable. If you are driving, park well outside the bay and take the train in.

How did crowd closures work?

The Singapore Police Force regulates entry to the busiest spots and closes them once they reach safety limits. Last year it named The Promontory, Merlion Park and Esplanade Park among the areas to be managed, and warned that MRT stations such as Bayfront could close or have trains skip them. On the night, access to nine Marina Bay areas was restricted from around 8pm, including Clifford Square, the Fullerton and Merlion waterfronts, Jubilee Bridge, the Esplanade waterfront, the Helix Bridge and three spots along the Marina Bay Sands waterfront. Officers may also check bags. The lesson: if you want a front-row spot, arrive before 8pm and stay put.

How do you get home?

Last year, train operators extended last trains into the early hours of 1 January. These were the published last departures for 31 December 2025:

LineLast departure (NYE 2025)
North-South Line2.15am from City Hall towards Jurong East
East-West Line2.15am from City Hall towards Pasir Ris and Tuas Link
North East Line2.16am, HarbourFront towards Punggol Coast
Circle Line1.41am from Dhoby Ghaut towards HarbourFront
Downtown Line2.04am, Expo towards Bukit Panjang
Thomson-East Coast Line2am, Bayshore towards Woodlands North

Selected bus services from major interchanges ran until about 3am to meet the last trains. To get out smoothly:

  1. Pick a station away from the bay. Walk ten or fifteen minutes to Raffles Place, City Hall or Esplanade rather than queueing at Bayfront.
  2. Wait it out. Have a drink or supper nearby and leave 30 to 45 minutes after midnight, when the first surge has cleared.
  3. Know your last train. Check this year’s extended times when they are published, and the bus service from your interchange.
  4. Expect surge pricing. Ride-hailing fares climb sharply after midnight, and pick-ups near the closed roads are slow.

The WahLiao Verdict

If you want the full Marina Bay moment, eat early, be at the waterfront by 7.30pm, bring water and a power bank, and plan to walk to a station outside the bay afterwards. If you have young children, the earlier fireworks at other sites in recent years have been the kinder choice. Either way, wait for this year’s official road and train notices in late December before fixing your plan, and do not trust a 2026-27 timetable published before then.

Questions people ask

What time are the Marina Bay fireworks?

The Marina Bay display is timed for midnight. Whether there will also be earlier fireworks on 31 December 2026 has not been announced.

Will the MRT run late on 31 December 2026?

It has in recent years, to around 2am, but this year’s times have not been published. Check LTA, SMRT and SBS Transit in late December.

Is it free to watch?

Watching from the public waterfront has been free. Some events at other sites, such as concerts, have been ticketed.

Can I fly a drone to film the fireworks?

No. Last year police declared a temporary restricted area where drones, kites and captive balloons were banned, with heavy penalties.
