Spectra is Marina Bay Sands’ free outdoor light and water show, staged over the bay at the Event Plaza in front of The Shoppes. As of October 2026, it runs at 8pm and 9pm from Sunday to Thursday, and at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and each show lasts about 15 minutes. Across the road at Gardens by the Bay, the Garden Rhapsody light and sound show lights up the Supertree Grove daily at 7.45pm and 8.45pm, also free. Time it well and you can see both in a single evening, without spending a cent.

Few cities put on a nightly show this generous. Here is when to go, where to stand and how to string the two together.

Quick facts

  • Spectra: free, about 15 minutes, at the Event Plaza, Marina Bay Sands.
  • Spectra times: Sunday to Thursday 8pm and 9pm; Friday and Saturday 8pm, 9pm and 10pm.
  • Garden Rhapsody: free, daily at 7.45pm and 8.45pm, Supertree Grove.
  • Garden Rhapsody’s theme rotates through the year, with a Christmas special from November.
  • No tickets are needed for either show in its usual form; special ticketed events at the Supertree Grove can apply at festive times.
  • Times can change for major events, so check the official pages on the day.

Where are the best free spots?

  • Event Plaza steps (Spectra): the front-row view, facing the water in front of The Shoppes. The tiered steps fill up first, so arrive 15 to 20 minutes early on weekends.
  • The promenade either side of the Event Plaza: slightly angled, but easier to find space and to leave quickly.
  • Across the bay: from the Merlion Park and Esplanade side you see the Marina Bay Sands skyline and the show’s lights from afar, though the water-screen images are best up close.
  • Under the Supertrees (Garden Rhapsody): lie back on the ground or sit on the benches in the Supertree Grove and look up; the centre of the grove gives the fullest view.

How do you see both in one evening?

The Supertree Grove and the Event Plaza sit on opposite sides of Marina Bay Sands, so you walk through or around the resort to get from one to the other. Leave a comfortable margin between shows rather than racing from one to the other.

  1. 7.30pm: settle in at the Supertree Grove.
  2. 7.45pm: watch Garden Rhapsody.
  3. After the show: walk over to the Event Plaza, with time for a snack or a stroll along the waterfront.
  4. 9pm: watch Spectra.
  5. Alternative: start with Spectra at 8pm, then walk to the Supertree Grove for the 8.45pm Garden Rhapsody.

Bayfront MRT (Circle and Downtown Lines) is the nearest station to both. Bring a fan and some water; evenings by the bay are still warm and humid. Our guide to what’s free at Gardens by the Bay covers the rest of the gardens.

The WahLiao Verdict

This is one of Singapore’s best free nights out, and it suits everyone from toddlers to visiting grandparents. Do the 7.45pm Garden Rhapsody first, then stroll over for the 9pm Spectra, when the crowds are a little thinner than at 8pm. Arrive early on Fridays and Saturdays, check the official pages if there is a big event on, and keep the evening simple: two shows, one walk, no bill.

Questions people ask

Is Spectra free?

Yes. Marina Bay Sands lists Spectra as free entry for all guests, with no age restriction. There is nothing to book.

How long is Spectra?

About 15 minutes per show, according to Marina Bay Sands.

Does it run when it rains?

Outdoor shows can be affected by bad weather and by special events. If the sky looks stormy, check Marina Bay Sands’ or Gardens by the Bay’s official pages and social channels before heading out.

Can I watch from a restaurant or bar?

Yes, several waterfront restaurants and bars around the bay overlook the show, but you will pay for food and drinks there. The free spots on the promenade give a better view of the water screens.
