Yes, Singapore has 24-hour supermarkets, and more of them than most people expect. FairPrice runs selected outlets round the clock, including some of its FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets. Sheng Siong keeps many of its heartland stores open all night. Some Cold Storage, Giant and Prime Supermarket branches never close, and Don Don Donki’s Orchard Central store has been open 24 hours. What surprises night shoppers is not whether the doors are open. It is what is behind them. What is different about a supermarket at 3am?
- The fresh counters are usually closed. Butchery, fish and deli counters generally keep daytime hours even in round-the-clock stores. Packed fresh meat and fish in the chillers remain.
- The shelves are being refilled. Night is when many stores restock, so expect trolleys of cartons in the aisles and the occasional empty shelf that will be full by morning.
- The bakery is yesterday’s. Bread baked in store usually arrives in the morning.
- Fewer tills are open. Expect one staffed counter and the self-checkout machines.
- It is calm. For many shoppers that is the whole point: no queues, no crowds, and time to read labels.
When do 24-hour stores not stay open?
Festivals are the exception. Around Chinese New Year each year, chains publish special hours: in 2026, about 36 FairPrice outlets stayed open round the clock on the eve, most other outlets closed at 5pm, and selected FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets extended their hours to 2am on the nights before. Renovations and lease changes also end 24-hour service without much notice. The sign on the door is the last thing to be updated.
Supermarket or convenience store at midnight?
A convenience store is always open and always near, and for a single carton of milk it is the sensible choice. But it carries a small range, few house brands and smaller pack sizes, so the price per gram is usually higher. If your list has more than a handful of items, the 24-hour supermarket will generally cost less, even if it is ten minutes further away.
Do discounts and vouchers work at night?
CDC supermarket vouchers can be used at the participating chains’ stores at any hour, since they are an in-store payment. They are not accepted at Don Don Donki. Carrier bags are charged at the large operators at night as by day.
