The easiest free way to compare supermarket prices in Singapore is Price Kaki, the app run by the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE). It lets you search for a grocery item, see its price and promotions at participating supermarkets, track price changes, and compare hawker dishes nearby. Shoppers can submit in-store prices, backed by a photo, and earn vouchers for doing so. It launched in 2019, went nationwide in 2020 and was relaunched in a simpler form in July 2025.

A price app answers “where is this item cheapest?” It does not answer “which supermarket is cheapest for my household?”, because that depends on your whole basket. For that, combine the app with unit prices on the shelf and a few weeks of your own receipts.

How does Price Kaki work?

CASE piloted Price Kaki in September 2019 in Jurong West, Tampines and Toa Payoh, with supermarkets including FairPrice, Giant, Sheng Siong and Prime supplying their price and promotion information. It went nationwide in June 2020, covering 278 supermarket stores, 94 hawker centres, about 4,000 commonly bought groceries and household items, and about 1,000 cooked dishes, and has kept growing. In July 2025 CASE released a simpler, improved version, and in 2026 it added more than 100 ready-to-eat products and deals from 7-Eleven.

With the app you can:

• Search for an item and compare its price and promotions across participating supermarkets.
• Filter and sort by price, distance or supermarket.
• Set alerts to follow price changes on items you buy often.
• Find nearby supermarkets and hawker centres, or search for a dish to see where it is sold and what it costs.
• Contribute prices you see in store, with a photo as proof, and earn rewards such as grocery or transport vouchers.

What are the limits of a price comparison app?

• Prices change. Promotions start and end, and crowd-sourced prices can lag. Check the shelf before you rely on a figure.
• Coverage varies. Not every chain, store or product is listed, and smaller shops may be missing.
• Single items are not a basket. The cheapest supermarket for milk may not be the cheapest for your whole list.
• Your time counts. A saving of a few cents is not worth a separate trip.

How to compare unit prices on the shelf

The fairest comparison is price per unit: per 100g, per litre, per sheet or per wash. Many shelf labels show it. Where they do not, divide the price by the quantity. This is how you see through two common traps: the big pack that costs more per gram than two small ones, and the promotion that looks generous only because the base price has crept up. How to find the cheapest supermarket for your household

1. Write down your usual basket: the 15 to 20 items you buy most weeks.
2. Price it at two or three supermarkets near you, using the app for a first pass and the shelf for confirmation.
3. Include the extras that change the total: senior or discount days, CDC vouchers, house brands and points.
4. Repeat once a quarter, since prices and promotions shift.
