Where to Stay in Singapore: The Best Areas by Budget and Trip (2026) | Visiting Singapore

By the WahLiao desk · Last verified 28 September 2026

For a first visit, stay near an MRT station in City Hall or Bugis: central, well connected and priced below Marina Bay. Choose Chinatown for character and food, Orchard Road for shopping and families, and Little India or Lavender for the lowest prices near the centre. Save Marina Bay for a splurge night and Sentosa for a resort holiday with children.

The room is the largest cost of any Singapore trip; hotel rooms averaged about S$273 a night across 2025. So the area you choose is also a budget decision. The good news is that almost every district below is under 20 minutes by train from the others. You are choosing a mood, not a commute.

City Hall and Bugis: the first-timer’s base

If you only read one section, read this one. City Hall sits where the East West and North South lines cross, beside the Esplanade and the museums. Bugis, one stop away, adds the Downtown Line and a more relaxed price. From either, Marina Bay is a short walk and Changi Airport is one train with one change.

Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar: character and dinner downstairs

Chinatown has the city’s densest mix of heritage shophouse hotels and hawker centres. Maxwell Food Centre and Chinatown Complex are on your doorstep, and the Thomson-East Coast Line now runs from Maxwell to Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay. Ask whether your room has a window and a lift before you book; not every shophouse does.

Marina Bay: the splurge night

This is the postcard district, and its hotels charge for the view. Many visitors spend one night here and the rest of the trip somewhere cheaper. Check the calendar first: the Singapore Grand Prix runs on the Marina Bay Street Circuit from 9 to 11 October 2026, and roads and rooms around the bay are affected.

Orchard Road: shopping and families

Orchard suits families who want big rooms, pools and a mall at the door. It is on the North South and Thomson-East Coast lines, and the Botanic Gardens are a short ride away. You will eat in food courts more than hawker centres here.

Little India, Farrer Park and Lavender: the budget belt

The lowest prices near the centre sit in these three districts, alongside some of the city’s best cheap food. Little India is lively, crowded on Sundays, and a Liquor Control Zone with stricter public drinking rules. Lavender and Farrer Park are quieter, with more modern budget hotels and capsule hostels.

Sentosa: when the holiday is the resort

Sentosa means beaches, theme parks and resort pools, and it works well for families with young children. It also means a train and a monorail every time you want the rest of Singapore. Stay here only if Sentosa is most of the plan.

Changi Airport and Jewel: for layovers and dawn flights

Changi has hotels inside and beside the terminals, including one in Jewel. For a single night between flights, or a 6am departure, they save a taxi and an alarm set for 3am.

How to choose: three rules

  1. Stay within five minutes’ walk of an MRT station. In this heat, that walk matters twice a day.
  2. Look at the lines, not just the station. A station where two lines cross saves a change on every trip.
  3. Book early around big dates: the Grand Prix (9 to 11 October 2026), the year-end holidays, and Chinese New Year (6 to 8 February 2027).

One thing to skip: a short stay in someone’s flat. Private homes cannot be let for less than three consecutive months, and HDB flats for less than six. Our trip cost guide explains why the hotel is the budget’s biggest line.

Where to stay in Singapore: FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Singapore for first-timers?

City Hall or Bugis. Both are central, on two or more MRT lines, and priced below Marina Bay.

What is the cheapest area to stay near the city centre?

Little India, Farrer Park and Lavender, where budget hotels and capsule hostels cluster within a few stops of the centre.

Is it worth staying at Marina Bay Sands?

For one night and the view, many visitors think so. For a whole trip, the same money buys more nights and better locations elsewhere.

Is Airbnb legal in Singapore?

Short stays in homes are not. Private homes need a minimum stay of three consecutive months and HDB flats six, so book a hotel, hostel or licensed serviced apartment.

Where should families stay in Singapore?

Orchard Road for space and malls, or Sentosa if the trip centres on beaches and theme parks.
