Trouble Overseas: MFA’s eRegister and the 24-Hour Consular Line

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) runs eRegister, a free and voluntary service where Singapore citizens record their travel plans so MFA and its overseas missions can contact and help them in an emergency, such as a natural disaster or civil unrest. You log in with Singpass, and can register up to 365 days ahead. If you need consular help abroad, for example after an arrest, an accident, a serious illness or a disaster, call the nearest Singapore mission or MFA’s 24-hour Duty Office on +65 6379 8800.

Why register?

So MFA knows you’re there. If an earthquake, a flood or unrest hits where you are, the local embassy can find and contact registered Singaporeans quickly and coordinate help or evacuation. MFA says the information is kept confidential and used only for that purpose unless you authorise otherwise or the law permits disclosure, such as in a crisis.

When should I call?

For emergencies: if you’re arrested, need to be repatriated, have a serious accident or illness, or are caught up in a natural disaster. Singapore’s embassies and consulates each list an after-hours emergency number; if you can’t reach it, call the Duty Office in Singapore. Where Singapore has no mission, other ASEAN countries have agreed to help one another’s nationals in emergencies.

What should I set up before I go?

  • Leave your itinerary and contact details with family or friends in Singapore.
  • Buy travel insurance that includes medical evacuation.
  • Save the contact details of the Singapore mission at your destination.
  • Check that your passport has at least six months’ validity; many countries require it.

Is eRegister compulsory?

Will MFA pay my medical bills?

Consular help is assistance, not insurance. That’s what travel insurance is for.
