Washers in Singapore carry water ticks from PUB, not energy ticks: 2, 3 or 4 ticks, and since 1 October 2015 only machines rated 2 ticks or better can be sold. Clothes dryers carry NEA energy ticks, with a 2-tick minimum since 1 January 2022. At one big retailer in June 2026, top-loaders ran from about S$300 to S$800 and front-loaders from about S$600 to S$1,600. Front-loaders are gentler and usually thriftier with water; top-loaders are quicker and cheaper. For drying, heat pump dryers cost the most upfront but use the least power, and need no vent to the outside.
Laundry never stops in a Singapore home, especially in monsoon season. A well-chosen pair of machines will quietly save you water, power and weekends for a decade.
Quick facts
- Washers: PUB Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme, rated 2 to 4 ticks.
- 4 ticks means 6 litres or less per kg of laundry; 2 ticks means more than 9 and up to 12 litres per kg.
- Dryers: NEA energy label mandatory since 2009; minimum 2 ticks since 1 January 2022.
- The dryer label’s annual cost assumes 3 loads a week at 27 cents per kWh.
- Delivery, installation and old-set disposal may be free or cost extra; one guide puts the extra at S$20 to S$60.
- Condenser and heat pump dryers collect water in a tank or drain hose; vented dryers need an outside outlet.
Front load or top load?
| Top load | Front load | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price (big retailer, June 2026) | From about S$300; S$529 to S$799 for listed 10kg to 13.5kg models | About S$607 (8kg) to S$1,599 (10kg) |
| Water use | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Cycle time | Shorter | Often 1.5 to 3 hours on a normal wash |
| Clothes care | Agitator or impeller can be rougher | Gentler tumbling |
| Fits best | Open service yards; add clothes mid-wash | Under counters, or stacked with a dryer |
Size the drum to your household: roughly 1 to 2kg of dry laundry per person per load, with headroom for bedsheets. Washer-dryer combos start from around S$919 at the same retailer and save space, but drying capacity is smaller than washing capacity.
Reading the labels
| Washer water ticks | Water per kg of laundry |
|---|---|
| 4 ticks | 6 litres or less |
| 3 ticks | More than 6, up to 9 litres |
| 2 ticks | More than 9, up to 12 litres |
Worked example: water saved
An 8kg load at the top of the 4-tick band uses up to 48 litres; at the top of the 2-tick band, up to 96 litres. At five loads a week, that gap of 48 litres a load comes to 260 loads and about 12,480 litres a year, or roughly 12.5 cubic metres. Multiply by the per-cubic-metre rate on your PUB bill to see the saving.
For dryers, compare the annual energy cost printed on the NEA label. It assumes three loads a week, so if you dry daily, your cost will be more than double the figure shown.
Vented, condenser or heat pump dryer?
| Type | How it works | Needs | Running cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vented | Pushes hot, damp air outside | A window or duct to the outside | Highest; few new models sold |
| Condenser | Condenses moisture into a tank | Empty the tank or connect a drain | Moderate |
| Heat pump | Reuses warm air in a closed loop | Empty the tank or connect a drain | Lowest; dries at lower temperatures |
A 2022 survey by Home & Decor found heat pump dryers mostly between S$1,000 and S$2,000, with condenser models around S$800 to S$900; check current prices, as ranges shift.
Installation in an HDB flat
- Measure the space, door widths and the lift; allow clearance behind for hoses.
- Check the tap and floor trap are within hose reach, and the power point is nearby and not on an extension cord.
- Stacking a dryer on a front-loader needs the brand’s stacking kit; ask if it is included.
- Level the machine to cut vibration and noise for your neighbours.
- Confirm delivery, installation and old-unit disposal charges in writing.
The WahLiao Verdict
For most HDB households, a 4-tick front-loader of 8 to 10kg is the best everyday choice: gentle, water-thrifty and stackable. Pick a top-loader if speed and price matter most. If you need a dryer, a heat pump model costs more at the till but is the kindest to your electricity bill and needs no vent. Confirm installation and disposal charges before you pay.
Questions people ask
Why don’t washing machines have energy ticks?
In Singapore, washers are regulated for water use under PUB’s scheme. Dryers, fridges, aircons, TVs and water heaters carry NEA energy labels.
Is a washer-dryer combo a good idea?
It saves space, but drying capacity is usually smaller than washing capacity and full cycles are long. Separate machines suit larger households.
Can I put a dryer in a bathroom or kitchen with no window?
Condenser and heat pump dryers do not need an outside vent, so they suit enclosed spaces, provided there is power and room to empty the tank.
How do I check if a washer is properly registered?
Look for the WELS label with its registration number, and search PUB’s WELS product listing. Avoid unlabelled machines.
