With one day in Singapore, do Chinatown in the morning, Marina Bay at midday, the Gardens by the Bay domes in the afternoon heat, and the two free light shows after dark. It costs about S$46 in tickets. With five days, follow our 3-day classic, then add a beach day on Sentosa and a morning on Pulau Ubin or in a heartland town.

On a stopover, leave your bags at the hotel or at Changi’s left baggage, and use the MRT between stops. If your flight leaves in the evening, swap the order: gardens and domes in the morning, Chinatown for lunch, then Jewel on the way to the airport.

Day 4: Sentosa
Walk across the Sentosa Boardwalk from VivoCity at HarbourFront; it takes about fifteen minutes and costs nothing. The beaches are free. If you want the big rides, Universal Studios Singapore tickets start at S$76 and vary by date, so book ahead. Otherwise, spend the day between the sand, the pool and a long lunch, and come back for dinner in the city.
Day 5: Pulau Ubin or a heartland town
Pulau Ubin is the island Singapore used to be: kampong houses, quiet lanes and mangroves. Bumboats from Changi Point Ferry Terminal cost about S$4 each way and leave when full, and bikes on the island cost about S$10 to S$15 a day. Bring cash and water, and go early. If islands are not your thing, spend the morning in a heartland town instead. Beyond the Tourist Trail suggests six, from Tiong Bahru’s art deco flats to Punggol’s waterfront. Either way, finish at Jewel on the way to your flight.
