Singapore Layover: What to Do With 5, 8, 12 or 24 Hours at Changi (2026) | Visiting Singapore

By the WahLiao desk · Last verified 28 September 2026

With a layover of 5.5 to 24 hours at Changi, you can join a free 2.5-hour Singapore bus tour without organising a thing: register in the transit area, stay airside, and let the guides take you through immigration. With eight hours or more, you can also go into the city on your own by MRT for about S$2 each way. Under five hours, stay airside and enjoy the airport.

Changi is one of the few airports where a layover is something people plan for. The trick is to be honest about the clock. Immigration, the train and the walk back to your gate all eat time, so the rule we use is simple: take what the layover gives you, then subtract three hours for getting out and back.

Singapore layover: quick facts

Free Singapore Tour For transit passengers with 5.5 to 24 hours; tours last 2.5 hours; register at the booths in the transit area

The WahLiao Verdict

Cost Nothing for the free tour; about S$4 in train fares if you go alone.
What you get A real taste of the city between two long flights.
The alternative A shower, a nap and the airside gardens, which is not a bad alternative.
Worth it for Anyone with six hours or more and a passport that gets them in easily.
Skip it if Your connection is tight, your bags are not through-checked, or you need a visa you do not have.

Under 5 hours: stay airside

With less than five hours, leaving the airport is not worth the risk. Changi’s transit areas have gardens, free rest areas, shower facilities, lounges and plenty of places to eat. Walk between terminals on the Skytrain, find a quiet corner, and get to your gate early. Jewel, with its indoor waterfall, sits on the public side of the airport, so seeing it means clearing immigration.

5.5 to 24 hours: the Free Singapore Tour

Changi Airport and Singapore Airlines run free 2.5-hour guided bus tours for transit passengers, open to travellers on any airline. There are several routes, covering the city sights, the heritage districts and the Changi area. You can book online ahead or walk up to the booths in the transit areas.

  1. When you land, stay in the transit area. Do not clear immigration on your own; the booths are airside.
  2. Register with your passport, boarding passes and any visa you need. Registration closes an hour before each tour.
  3. Leave cabin bags at the left baggage counter before you register.
  4. The guides take the group through immigration and back again.

Transit passengers may enter and leave Singapore only once during a layover, so you can join only one tour. If you need a visa to enter Singapore, you still need one for the tour.

8 to 12 hours: see the city on your own

With eight hours or more, you can go it alone. File the SG Arrival Card, clear immigration, and take the MRT from Terminal 2 or 3 into the city. A classic four-hour loop: Marina Bay and the Merlion, lunch at Lau Pa Sat or Maxwell Food Centre, and the Gardens by the Bay domes if the heat is bad. In the evening, Garden Rhapsody at 7.45pm is free.

Count backwards from your departure time. Be back at Changi three hours before your flight, which means leaving the city about four hours before. Changi Airport to the City has train times and taxi fares, including the last train.

24 hours or more: make it a stopover

With a full day, book a hotel near an MRT station, or a transit hotel inside the airport if you would rather not clear immigration. Then follow the first day of our 1-day Singapore itinerary. Some travellers who normally need a visa may qualify for ICA’s visa-free transit arrangements; check ICA’s pages for your passport before you plan on it.

Singapore layover: FAQ

Can I leave Changi Airport during a layover?

Yes, if you meet Singapore’s entry requirements. File the SG Arrival Card, clear immigration, and allow at least three hours to get back through check-in and security.

How long does my layover need to be for the free Singapore tour?

Between 5.5 and 24 hours, with flight times that fit the tour schedule.

Do I need an SG Arrival Card for a layover?

Only if you clear immigration. If you stay airside, you do not. Free tour participants follow the tour desk’s instructions.

Is it worth leaving the airport on a 6-hour layover?

Only on the free tour, which handles immigration for you. On your own, six hours leaves too little time once you subtract the trip in and out.
